ABC’s Castle is continuing the disturbing recent TV trend of losing female leads with the news that Season 9 will be losing co-lead Stana Katic, as Deadline revealed this morning.
Tamala Jones will also be departing the show in a shake-up. The series’ male lead, Nathan Fillion, will be staying.
“Kate Beckett has been a beloved character on our hit series Castle for the past eight years,” ABC said in a statement that was posted on Deadline. “We are grateful for Stana Katic’s talent and dedication to the series and we hope to continue our relationship. Tamala Jones has also been an integral part of the series and we are grateful she was a part of Castle.”
Katic herself didn’t comment on the situation but did releas a statement. “Rather then distract from what was an amazing experience I would just like to say that I’m very grateful to ABC for giving me the opportunity to be a part of a much beloved show. Thank you to the fans,” it said.
TV Line is reporting that Stana Katic was not asked back for Season 9, and that last year’s one-year contract extension has expired. Castle is not yet officially renewed for a ninth season, but these cost-cutting and show-changing measures seem to imply that it will be.

Nathan should announce he’s quitting as well. Castle without Caskett is just not Castle.
