Deadline is reporting that Lord of the Rings star Orlando Bloom has been tapped to star in Amazon fantasy series Carnival Row. He’ll be playing Rycroft Philostrate, a police inspector investigating the murder of a faerie showgirl.
From Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim) and Rene Echevarria (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Carnival Row is set in a neo-Victorian city filled with mythical creatures that’ve fled their homeland for the peace that the city provides. However, tension between citizens and a flourishing immigrant population eventually spill over into a string of unsolved murders that pushes the Carnival Row police force to their breaking point.
Bloom is the first member of the show’s cast to be announced. This will be his first scripted series regular role after a film career that quickly blew up in the early 2000s. His previous television credits include guest spots on Midsomer Murders, Extras, and Easy.
Having been ordered to series this past May, Carnival Row is set to begin filming next fall for a premiere in 2019. Amazon’s current scripted slate includes Emmy winner Transparent, Golden Globe winner Mozart in the Jungle, and crime drama Patriot, with its next wave of programming featuring anthology Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams and action dramedy Jean-Claude Van Johnson.
