Though rumors have been whirling around for quite a while, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news today that the Saul Goodman-centered spin-off of Breaking Bad is officially moving forward with AMC.
It’s unsurprising that AMC would be willing to strike a deal to keep a facet of TV’s favorite drama, especially considering how enthusiastic those involved seem to be about it. The show, tentatively titled Better Call Saul, will be a prequel following the evolution of the slimy “criminal” lawyer before the series. As such, it’ll likely mirror Walter White’s journey into the meth business in its parent show, without hinging on (or spoiling) what’s going to happen to present-day Saul in the finale in a few weeks. And of course, it will star Bob Odenkirk, meaning his dual comedic timing and dramatic chops are sure to make this entertaining and probably hilarious. Peter Gould, who wrote Saul’s introduction and the spin-off’s namesake in season 2’s ”Better Call Saul”, is set to be showrunner. Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad, will still have involvement.
Is having the Breaking Bad universe continue a good idea, or does this risk tarnishing the mondo legacy it will leave behind when it’s laid to rest? Either way, the show is sure to be a hit initially, at least, considering the fierce dedication of Breaking Bad‘s ever-growing fanbase.
