By intentionally killing the Glimmer without being forced to in the name of self-defense, Arthur showed Grace that he has the capacity to get dark. He might’ve come into the race trying to hold on to his goodness and respect for the law, but Arthur has slowly begun to prioritize his survival above all else. Even with some of the motivation for killing the Glimmer coming from the frustration and helplessness he feels being trapped in the deadly Blood Drive, Arthur still found it within himself to do what he did and that told Grace quite a bit about his mental state. So much so that she realized that she can use her partner’s newfound embrace of danger to her advantage.
On the next episode of Blood Drive, Grace convinces Arthur to accompany her to Kane Hill in search of Karma. Not only does this play into his anger at Heart Enterprises, given that he would no longer be acting as a puppet in their twisted game, it allows him to feel like the good cop again; Arthur’s entire motivation for completing the Blood Drive is that he wants to bring it all down around him, that everyone associated with the race deserves to be put behind bars. Saving Karma wouldn’t exactly burn down the race as they knew it, but it would be a way to help Grace while sticking it to Heart and getting at least one person away from the madness wrought by the corporation. But once The Scholar deactivates the devices in their necks, Grace and Arthur have a limited time to execute their plan, as taking too much of a detour could leave them in the back of the pack with little time to catch up. Granted, they might not have to worry about their heads exploding if they get separated or end up finishing in last, but if Julian figures out that two of his characters went rogue on their own terms, he’ll find something a lot more painful and a lot less instant to use on them.
Blood Drive airs Wednesdays at 10:00 on Syfy.
Will Grace and Arthur be able to free Karma from Kane Hill? What happens if the detour they took comes to the attention of Julian and the network executives? If Grace and Arthur get pushed to the back of the pack as a result of their sojourn to Kane Hill, is the nitrous from Steel City enough to help them catch up and avoid elimination?
