Starz has announced that the upcoming fourth season of pirate drama Black Sails will be its last.
“Jon Steinberg and Robert Levine, along with their crew and the phenomenal cast, have delivered a spectacular take on the most legendary pirate story in literature, and this final season will bring us to the shores of Treasure Island as was always intended,” said Starz Managing Director Carmi Zlotnik. “Black Sails has been a tremendous success; from the loyal fan following and strong viewership numbers to awards recognition and the skill of our world-class production in Cape Town, we could not be more proud of this very special series.”
From Jonathan E. Steinberg (Jericho) and Robert Levine (Human Target), Black Sails takes place 20 years before the events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s literary classic Treasure Island and incorporates characters from the novel with historical figures in an ambitious telling of the battle for New Providence Island. Set during the Golden Age of Piracy, the series follows everyone from the fearsome Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) to scrappy John Silver (Luke Arnold), quiet but deadly Anne Bonny (Clara Paget), and eager Eleanor Guthrie (Hannah New) as they navigate the frequently changing alliances on the island and attempt to make their mark on a world with no rules without losing their lives in the process.
This conclusion for Black Sails comes a day after Starz renewed crime drama Power for a fourth and fifth season, a renewal that came after acclaimed drama Outlander was given a third and fourth season earlier this summer. Black Sails is the latest genre drama from Starz to get an early conclusion, as Da Vinci’s Demons was shown the door after three seasons to mostly nebulous reasons.
The fourth and final season of Black Sails should premiere in early 2017.
