A DC Comics icon is coming to the Arrowverse.
A surprise announcement came this morning at The CW’s upfront presentation in New York that this year’s Arrowverse crossover will feature Batwoman — note that it’s not Batgirl, but rather the “Kate Kane” version introduced in the 52 comic book series in 2005 — and Gotham City will also be introduced to the Arrowverse story!
The character has since headlined her own title as well as DC’s Detective Comics; she was also included prominently in the Batman: Bad Blood animated feature. She is also notable in that she’s one of the highest-profile LGBT characters in the comic book world, so it’s a big deal to have her coming to TV.
This isn’t the first time a character from the Batman universe of characters has appeared on The CW’s “Arrowverse” group of shows; Helena Bertinelli, The Huntress appeared on Arrow as early as the show’s first season, and villain Ra’s al Ghul has been a recurring part of the Arrow series.
Finally, we’ll just say it: Dare we to hope that with Batwoman’s appearance, we see the return of Floriana Lima’s Supergirl character Maggie Sawyer in the crossover? Time will tell; fans of that series have certainly been pushing for Maggie’s return, though they might be disappointed if her comeback isn’t to see Chyler Leigh’s Alex Danvers. Let’s see if and when The CW reveals more.
