According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO has given a series order to Avenue 5, a space comedy from Veep creator Armando Iannucci. The move comes as no surprise given the auspices involved and the fact that backup scripts were ordered along with the pilot.
Set to star Hugh Laurie (House), Avenue 5 is described as a space tourism comedy set 40 years in the future when the solar system is everyone’s oyster.
In addition to Laurie, Avenue 5 features Josh Gad (Frozen), Zach Woods (Playing House), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Luther), Rebecca Front (The Thick of It), Lenora Crichlow (Being Human), Suzy Nakamura (Dr. Ken), and Ethan Phillips (Girls).
Avenue 5 is part of an extensive slate of newbies that HBO has ordered recently, decisions driven by their recent acquisition by A&T. Just in the comedy space, the series joins Los Espookys, a primarily Spanish-language series that follows a group of friends as they turn their love of horror into a career; Mrs. Fletcher, which follows a mother experiencing empty-nest syndrome who seeks out the fulfillment she’s been lacking; The Righteous Gemstones, about a televangelist family; and Run, a half-hour dramedy from Killing Eve creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
