Deadline is reporting that American Gods showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green have exited the Starz drama, having informed the cast of their departure today. No specific reason for the sudden change has been made public as of yet, though the two leave the project with most of the season two scripts completed.
This is the second show that Fuller has exited recently following his sudden evacuation from Star Trek: Discovery, which was said to be over wanting to anthologize Discovery and struggling with other commitments. Next on tap for him is producing Amazing Stories for Apple. Green, meanwhile, will next be writing Murder on the Orient Express sequel Death on the Nile and executive producing Netflix superhero drama Raising Dion.
Based on the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name, American Gods tells the story of Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), an ex-con who finds himself at a crossroads after being released early from prison due to his wife’s death. He soon lands a job working with conman Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), but what Shadow doesn’t know is that Mr. Wednesday is an old god looking to raise an army of fellow old gods and take down the upstart new gods that threaten their reign.
In addition to McShane and Whittle, American Gods stars Cloris Leachman (Raising Hope), Jonathan Tucker (Kingdom), Pablo Schreiber (Orange is the New Black), Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), and Emily Browning (Sucker Punch). The series is part of a scripted slate for Starz that includes Power, Outlander, and Ash vs Evil Dead.
