According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC has given its first comedy series order for next season to high school-based A.P. Bio.
Executive produced by Seth Meyers and Lorne Michaels (Saturday Night Live), A.P. Bio tells the story of a cynical Ivy League philosophy professor (Glenn Howerton) who loses out on his dream job and goes to work as a high school Advanced Placement biology teacher. However, he has no desire to actually teach biology, so he decides to use the bright minds at his disposal for his own personal gain.
In addition to Howerton, whose involvement with the next season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is up in the air, A.P. Bio stars Patton Oswalt (The Goldbergs), Mary Sohn (The Boss), Lyric Lewis (MADtv), and Aparna Brielle (Grimm).
A.P. Bio joins a roster of 2017-18 freshmen for NBC that includes high school drama Rise; military drama For God and Country; and the revival of Will & Grace, which is penciled in for a fall premiere. It’s unclear yet how many new comedies NBC will order for next year, but considering how heavy they are in terms of drama and variety, and how they were unable to find a breakout this season, Superstore, Will & Grace, The Good Place, and A.P. Bio might be joined by one or two more projects at most.
