NBC has opted to renew high school comedy AP Bio for a second season, it was confirmed today.
The renewal comes as something of a surprise, given that the strong promotional platform granted to AP Bio (Olympic preview, episodes released in advance for online sampling/word-of-mouth) hasn’t helped the show gain much of a foothold in the ratings. However, it’s a show that features a performer they want to keep working with in Glenn Howerton, indexes at a 149 among adults 18-49 with four or more years of college to rank #3 among primetime series on the Big 4 networks, and has support both internally at NBC and in the media, so with Champions DOA and Great News (likely) out of chances, the network decided to make it the comedy bubble renewal for 2017-2018.
From Mike O’Brien (Saturday Night Live), AP Bio follows disgraced philosophy professor Jack Griffin (Glenn Howerton) as he loses out on a dream job and finds himself “slumming it” teaching biology at a high school in Ohio. But rather than actually teaching any biology, Jack uses the bright minds at his disposal to get revenge on the man who cost him the job of a lifetime.
In addition to Howerton, AP Bio stars Tom Bennett (Family Tree), Patton Oswalt (Happy!), and Aparna Brielle (Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life).
The season finale of AP Bio aired earlier this month on NBC.
