CBS has confirmed that freshman comedy 9JKL has been cancelled after one season.
The move comes as no surprise considering CBS’s rumored desire to shake up their Monday lineup and 9JKL‘s status as a fall freshman series that only received a partial back order. Despite being owned by CBS, the series didn’t average high enough 18-49 demo (0.96) or retain enough from its lead-in (64%) for it to be a feasible candidate for renewal.
From Dana Klein (Friends with Better Lives) and Mark Feuerstein (Royal Pains), 9JKL told the story of divorced actor Josh Roberts (Feuerstein), who moves back to New York City after his TV show gets cancelled. The proximity to his family, who live in the adjacent apartments, should in theory provide the support system he needs during a trying time, but Josh soon realizes that they’re perhaps a bit too supportive. The series follows Josh trying to figure out his next professional step while setting boundaries with his overbearing family.
In addition to Feuerstein, 9JKL starred Elliott Gould (Ray Donovan), Linda Lavin (The Good Wife), Liza Lapira (Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23), David Walton (About a Boy), Albert Tsai (Trophy Wife), and Matt Murray (Eyewitness).
The series finale of 9JKL aired this past February on CBS.
